Edible Books Project

Last year, as you will recall, it was Moby Dick. This year, for the edible books project it’s Mary Poppins.  Specifically, the gingerbread with the gold paper stars that Mary, with Mrs. Corry and her daughters put up in the sky.

Starting with the gingerbread:

  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 2 T sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 C molasses
  • 1 C boiling water
  • 30 ml rum
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1 t cinnamon
  • 1 t nutmeg
  • 1 t ginger
  • 1/2 t cloves
  • 1 t allspice
  • 2 1/4 C flour

Combine these ingredients, in order in your mixer.  Combine.  Grease a 9 x 9″ pan.  Pour the batter into the pan, lick the raw batter off the paddle.  Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or until a matchstick comes out clean.  While it’s baking, make gold paper stars.

Allow the cakes to cool, cut into squares, and put the gold paper stars on top of the squares.

You’re on your own in putting the stars up into the sky.  You’ll need a very long ladder and some glue.

(If that doesn’t work, you can always take a box of pop-tarts, stand them on the short edges, fan them out, and cover with blue frosting, and there you have “Mary Pop-Tarts”. )

Nyuck, Nyuck.
