The cultural diversity angle is an interesting one, because it does bring up what the limits of respecting diversity might be. For instance, western cultures are generally fine with parades and festivals being celebrated by diverse cultures, but burning widows or stoning rebellious children…not so much.
While I wouldn’t necessarily compare gun ownership with freedom of religion, these are similarly tricky territories. I think some people avoid the conversations entirely because there sometimes seems no neutral place where offense won’t be instantly taken.
Do I trust you with a gun? Yes. Do I trust Brigid with a gun? Yes. You are responsible people. What I’d like is some way to distinguish between your forms of ownership and the gangsta kids who kill to prove “they can carry out a mission”.
[No, I’m not asking you to solve that problem here!]

“Myself - I can just say. Who are the militia? If it is my home, my body, my freedom being threatened, then frankly, the militia is ME. The power of my weapon is not, at that moment in time, within the order of my life as it is lived at that moment, with the Government. It is where it should be always be, God willing, in my hands, trained and ready to defend and protect.”--Brigid B.

That particular weapon in my poster hasn’t been shot in a few years, though its been cared for. Think it’s time it got a trip to the gun range.
