Call For Limericks

Sparrow is going it alone, so now every week there are two, TWO chances for competitive poetry.

This week, in honour of the weather, the limerick theme is SNOW: Winner gets a care package sent to a service member of their choice serving in harm’s way. Five lines, A-A-B-B-A rhyme scheme, the dirtier the better.

  1. With a name like Holly you know what that meant
Christmas had marked the blessed event.
No, twas the 25th of September
    though her Mom does remember.
snowed in, she was someone’s present.

  2. At the sight of the wintery clouds
“It’s snowing!” he cried right out loud.
    But his snow angel led
    To a real one instead
As he lay in the way being plowed.

  3. From Pburgh, Winter downward blows,
With cold wind that freezes my nose.
    When the neighbors say
Their dog was in all day
But the evidence lies in the snow.

(I was going to do a limerick about the cleaning woman who likes to leave dirt from her vacuum cleaner in our hedge, but that’s a yearlong occurrence.)

  4. I went north to cold Tyne and Wear
To meet friends on a cold New Year’s Day
But what seemed like fresh snew
    Was thick blackbird poo
And it clung to my suitcase like clay.

[Yes, true story; the leafless trees across from the railway station were clotted with thousands of shitting starlings….]

  5. Outside winter’s anger is showing
While inside the embers are glowing
    Should I venture out there
    In the cold, frosty air?
I think not, because now it is SNOWING!

  7. As the long winter evenings draw nigh
The ole-timers will recall with a sigh
how lucky they were to survive
    that fierce blizzard of Aught-Five
    which left Tampa buried inch-high.
