The radiotelescope at Arecibo, PR is threatened by budget cuts. I’m a big believer in both pure and applied research, and the problem is you can’t develop applications without good basic knowledge. The telescope is also used to search for near-Earth (a.k.a. “Earth-grazing” objects). Like the ones that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. You want to talk about saving the planet? This is a good place to start.
